At home, I found I shouldn’t be there. It was four in the morning, I was in a borderline psychotic state, and my mother was awake. I illustrated nonverbal thoughts by drawing trails across the air, swirling with magical twists of my arms, hands, and body, Isadora Duncan beyond reason. After watching long enough to determine I was harmless, Mom closed her bedroom door and left me alone to come down.

I danced around a while longer; then I turned to Duffy. He’d been watching, too, from long-lashed terrier eyes, but in a mild, nonjudgmental way. Sitting on the couch together, we put our heads under the drawn curtains and gazed outside. We nuzzled each other in understanding, watching early light filter into the garden. He was the most intelligent creature I’d run across all night. The deep green of the plants was dewy as the flowers opened to morning.

After the sun turned the world to day, my eyes fell on a Time magazine. This seemed almost comic—in the corner, I read the words “August 1968.” Apparently that was the present, though it sounded like years before. I was eighteen. I lived in California, where nothing lasted and everything remained new. Headlines had proclaimed God was dead when God seemed beyond and between birth and death. Everything and nothing was what I had left to believe in. I walked to my bedroom and collapsed in exhaustion.

It was the last time I ever took LSD.
